At Roots and Wings, we believe education should be as unique as the children we serve. Every student comes to the classroom with their own story – distinct experiences, strengths, challenges, and learning styles. That’s why we don’t view personalized instruction as just a strategy. It’s at the heart of our approach. 

In our free afterschool program, Project UpLift, students enter a learning environment designed around them, not a one-size-fits-all model. Instruction adapts to each child’s pace, interests, and learning style. Whether a student thrives with visual aids, needs extra time to grasp phonics, or benefits from hands-on practice, we meet them where they are. 

This is especially vital when it comes to literacy. Some children master reading fundamentals quickly; others need a more gradual, multi-sensory approach. Our small-group sessions provide the space and flexibility to tailor instruction, helping students build their skills and confidence.

Research from the Learning Policy Institute shows that personalized learning models lead to stronger academic growth. The RAND Corporation similarly found that these models support gains in both reading and math. The data backs what we see every day: personalized learning helps children thrive. 

The benefits extend beyond academics. Educators in our program are empowered to focus on each student’s progress. With smaller groups and real-time flexibility, teachers can adjust instruction, celebrate breakthroughs, and foster meaningful student connections. 

We also weave social-emotional learning (SEL) into every lesson. When students feel emotionally safe and understood, they’re more likely to take academic risks, bounce back from setbacks, and stay curious. SEL doesn’t just support learning, it accelerates it. Studies show it improves academic performance, behavior, and overall well-being. 

Perhaps most importantly, personalized instruction is a tool for equity. Traditional classrooms can unintentionally leave struggling students behind. When we tailor learning to each child’s needs, we send powerful messages: We see you! We believe in you! You can succeed!
