The Importance of Early Literacy: Why Reading by Third Grade Matters

Reading by third grade isn’t just a developmental milestone– it’s one of the most critical predictors of a child’s long-term academic and personal success. Studies show that children who are not proficient readers by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school. For students living in poverty, that number is even higher because they lack the resources needed to close the gap.

Third grade marks a pivotal shift: students go from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” Reading becomes the primary tool for acquiring new information from fourth grade onward. In science, they’re reading to understand complex systems. In math, they’re deciphering word problems. In social studies, they’re navigating historical narratives and government structures. Students can’t fully access or absorb any of that information if they can’t read well. And the further they fall behind, the harder it becomes to catch up.

At Roots and Wings, we understand just how essential this transition is. That’s why early literacy is a cornerstone of our mission. We believe that reading proficiency by third grade is not just a goal– it’s a necessity. And the only way to reach it is through early, consistent, compassionate intervention.

Our free children’s literacy program, Project UpLift, provides individualized reading instruction in small groups after school. We collaborate closely with teachers, principals, and reading coaches to identify which students need the most support, those who are reading one or two grades behind and are in the bottom 25% of the class. Project UpLift provides a nurturing, focused environment for them to build their skills. They are not attending a one-size-fits-all program– they get tailored instruction that meets them exactly where they are.

Most importantly, it works! Students in Project UpLift not only improve their reading proficiency; they also show an increase in self-confidence. They’re no longer afraid to raise their hand in class or read aloud. They begin to see themselves as capable learners. That shift in mindset is just as important as their academic progress.

Roots and Wings is proud to lead the movement pushing for community-based solutions to early literacy. We know that schools can’t do it alone. It takes all of us—parents, neighbors, local businesses, and civic leaders—to prioritize reading and support the programs that help children thrive.

When a child learns to read, a world of opportunity opens to them! When a community comes together to make that possible, everyone rises! Visit our website to learn how you can help.
