At Roots and Wings, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to succeed, and a strong foundation in literacy is essential to making that possible. By the time a child reaches the 3rd grade, reading skills play a pivotal role in their academic and personal development. Research shows that early literacy not only supports academic achievement but also builds confidence, fosters curiosity, and opens doors to endless possibilities.

Studies show that students who aren’t reading at grade level by the end of 3rd grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school than their peers.

Why 3rd Grade Matters

The transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn” typically happens in 3rd grade. Until this point, children are primarily focused on grasping basic reading skills by decoding words, understanding sentence structure, and improving fluency. After 3rd grade, however, they begin using reading as a tool to learn other subjects like science, history, and math. If a child is not reading proficiently by this point, their ability to absorb and understand increasingly complex material can be compromised.

The Benefits of Early Literacy

Fostering literacy early on sets children up for a lifetime of success. When children are proficient readers, they are more likely to engage actively in learning, develop critical thinking skills, and have a greater love for reading that extends beyond the classroom. Early literacy supports cognitive development and enhances vocabulary, communication skills, and imagination. It also equips children to better navigate the digital world, where reading remains a crucial skill, even in a multimedia environment.

Together, we can make a lasting difference in their lives and in the future of our community.

How Parents and Communities Can Help

Building strong literacy skills doesn’t start in the classroom; it begins at home and within the community. Parents can play a key role by reading to their children from an early age, fostering a love for stories, and making reading a daily habit. Simple actions like visiting the local library, having books easily accessible, and encouraging curiosity through reading can make a big difference.

At Roots and Wings, we are proud to partner with schools, teachers, and families to support child literacy from the ground up. Through our Project UpLift program, we ensure children have access to resources and the personalized attention they need to thrive. By focusing on literacy development, we are helping children succeed academically and empowering them to be confident, lifelong learners.
